Driven by Design: An Investigation into Viewer Comprehension & Engagement with Data Visualisations used in Sports Broadcasting.
My First Class dissertation explored how viewers comprehend and engage with data visualisations in sports broadcasting, with a particular focus on Formula 1 telemetry graphics. Through primary research including surveys with both design professionals and general viewers, I uncovered insights about how different graphics serve different purposes and how viewer expertise dramatically influences comprehension. The study revealed that whilst familiarity with the sport enhances understanding of complex data visualisations, design professionals approach and evaluate these graphics in markedly different ways to general audiences.
The project combined my passion for design with academic research, resulting in work that bridges the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application in the fast-paced world of sports media, with conclusions drawn from real-life data.
