AGING

This project is a design of a limited edition release of Linkin Park’s compilation album, ‘Papercuts’. This design needs to be immersive and capture the essence of the album, matching the intensity and emotions found in the music.

This release would include three key deliverables: an album design, which includes all assets, such as inner and outer record sleeve designs, and digital variations. Following this would be a product launch website where users could order the album, and a social media campaign launching the product and including a competition.

Brief

The main visual used in this project is a ‘spectrogram’. This is a visual translation of an MP3 file, converting the sound into spikes. I created spectrograms for every song on the album. I chose to use the spectrogram for the song ‘Castle of Glass’ as it had a slower, quieter start, resulting the in the negative space seen on the back cover. This gave me areas to use when zooming in on the design. I manipulated the shape of the of the spectrogram in Adobe Photoshop, adjusting the colours to create an intense and raw image. This then allowed me to create all other branding assets, creating a cohesive and consistent set of deliverables.

The album was created in InDesign, where I was able to treat the type on the back cover with care. Extra attention had to be given to the horizontal text, as I had to decrease the tracking to increase legibility from both sides.

The website was made in Figma, and features both a MOBILE and DESKTOP prototype.

The social posts were made across platforms, notably with the animations and reels being created in Adobe After Effects. I created a distortion glitch effect of the spectrogram artwork to add another dimension to the image.

Process

The final designs for this project included:

Album design: Designs created for a physically crafted record, as well as digital applications of the design for use in streaming apps like Spotify.

Product launch website: a website that users would be directed to in order to buy the product. This highlights key aspects of the product. This features both a desktop and mobile prototype.

Social campaign: A competition to engage with users, gain traction, and announce the product release. This features two Instagram posts and one Reel about the competition, as well as a Reel announcing the launch of the album.
